実は私はマンガが大好きで昔は自分でもマンガを描いていました。今回は書道を扱ったマンガの紹介です。

 

「とめはね」は河合克敏の漫画。高校生の男の子がひょんな事から書道部に入ることになり、書を学びながら成長していく物語です。監修は有名な書家の武田双雲氏で、書法や書作品の解説もあり書になじみのない人にも楽しめる内容になっています。2010年にはNHKでドラマ化されているので見た方もあるかもしれません。その昔、書道教室を考え始めた時に、指導法の参考になるかもと他の先生に教えてもらいました。新入部員が「一（いち）」だけを百枚書かされるスパルタなシーンや、姿勢を正すために細い線や丸を書かせるなどの指導法はとても参考になりました。作中に出てくる書作品をマンガ家ではなく、書家や高校の書道の先生に書いてもらっているというのも斬新でした。

 

この作者は、柔道マンガ「帯をギュッとね」が初の連載作品で、ボートレースを題材にした「モンキーターン」を描くなど、日本の伝統文化や今までマンガの題材になっていないニッチな主題を描く面白いマンガ家さんです。海外でも翻訳版があるようですので海外の方はそれぞれのお国で探してみてください。

 

日本のマンガが好きで書道にも興味がある人にはもってこいの作品だと思うのでコラム最初のテーマにしてみました。

 

他に書道を題材にしたマンガは寡聞にして知りません。同じ「道」のつく柔道、剣道のマンガはたくさんありますが、マンガと同じ二次元を表現の舞台にする書道はマンガにしにくかったのかもしれませんね。

To be honest, I love Manga so much. In my younger days, I have drawn cartoons by myself. Here let me introduce a cartoon about Japanese Calligraphy.

 

“Tome Hane”, manga of by Mr. Katsutoshi Kawai. A high school boy happened to join a calligraphy club and grew up through studying calligraphy. Its supervising editor is a famous calligrapher, Mr. Souun Takeda. Even beginners may easily understand about calligraphy as it explains well about basic writing styles and historic calligraphy works etc. Some might have watched a TV program of “Tome Hane” on NHK broadcasting in 2010. A while ago, when I considered opening calligraphy school, a senior calligrapher recommended me to read the manga. There were informative scenes for calligraphy lesson, such as a new comer of the club was asked to draw just “一(one)” hundred times to draw a beautiful straight line, and asked to continue drawing thin lines and circles to adjust her posture. Interestingly, calligraphy works in the manga were not drawn by the manga artist himself but by actual calligrapher or school teachers of calligraphy.

 

The manga artist is unique. He drew “Obi wo Gyuttone (I tightly band)”, a manga of traditional sport, Judo as his first serial comic, and “Monkey Turn”, a manga of boat race which had never been on manga before. Please check translated version, may be available outside Japan.

 

I picked up this manga as the first topic, for this will best fit for those who love Japanese manga and are interested in Japanese calligraphy.

 

I have little knowledge so don’t know other manga on Japanese calligraphy. There are many manga on Judo, Kendo, other traditional Japanese “DO” culture. Calligraphy may be difficult to put on manga as both are the same 2-D arts.
