書道をされない方は書の作品の大きさなんて気にした事ないでしょうね〜。書作品の大きさと言われてイメージされるのは小さい順に、色紙、習字の授業で書く半紙、禅語などが書かれた掛け軸、はたまた床一面に書き上げる書道パフォーマンスなどでしょうか。

 

由来、書は日常の記録や手紙、詩文を書くものでしたからサイズも小さく、大きくても屏風や長い巻紙くらいでした。石碑などに彫るようになって大きな作品が現れ、「紀泰山銘」（写真１）のような8m x 5mと、正に見上げるばかりの大作が作られました。

 

実は日本の書作品の大型化には一つのターニングポイントがあると言われています。それもぐっと近代の話。それまでは屏風や全紙ほどが精々だったものが一気に巨大化（！）したのです。それは1926年（大正15年）のこと。当時の書家のほとんどが参加した日本書道作振会の第二回展覧会が、新築なったばかりの東京府美術館（現東京都美術館）で開催された時でした。洋風で天井の高い美術館が書にあうはずがないと開催に反対の声もありましたが、その器に合う作品として縦3mの作品などが書かれるようになりました。大きな作品を書くために体育館を借りるなど書く方も大変ですが、展覧会に応募された全ての作品を審査する側のご苦労も想像にあまりありますね。天井から吊された作品が次々ステージに現れる審査風景を見たことがありますが絶景でした。

 

広く海外にも眼をむけてみますと、縦10ｍ横100ｍ（！）の書作品の記事がありました。(写真2)

意外にもギネスブックでは認定されておらず、逆にギネスでは最小の文字として0.3ナノメートル（1ナノメートルは10億分の1メートル）の文字が記録されていました。こうなると米粒に字を書くどころではありませんね！

Those who not do calligraphy may have little interest on size of calligraphy works. Talking about the size, you may imagine autograph card, paper for Japanese calligraphy lesson (Hanshi 25cm x 35cm), hanging scroll (Kake-Jiku 35cm x 135cm), or huge paper spreading over a floor for calligraphy performance.

 

Originally, calligraphy was written on small papers/materials to record activity, letters, poems, or drawn on bigger materials such as folding screens, rolled long letter papers. Inscriptions on steles could be much bigger. “Rubbing of stone inscription on Mt. Tai”(Photo1) is literary monumentally huge, sizes 8m x 5m.

 

It is said that Japanese calligraphy became suddenly bigger at an occasion in the 20th century. The trigger was an exhibition held in 1926, by “Nihon Shodo Sakushin Kai”, a calligrapher group where most of famous calligraphers at then participated. The exhibition was held at newly build current-Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. Its rooms were in western style, high-ceilinged, and not considered suitable for small works of Japanese calligraphy. As a result, calligraphers then had to write in much bigger size like 3m height. Now big size works are popular, but require large space to write, like a gymnastic hall. It is also tough work for contest judges to review all such big works at once! Actually, it was so lovely view that judges reviewed works hanging from the ceiling one after another.

Surprisingly large calligraphy is not in the Guinness Book of World Records. Only I could find in the Book so far is the nano-sized letters in 0.3 nanometers!! (1 nanometer is 1/1billion meter). No way for calligraphers to write by brush!!

Maybe there is still a chance to write a “large” calligraphy and apply world record?
