「雅号」とは書家の別名、ペンネームのようなもの。自分の雅号は「紅酔」です。この雅号についてはありがたいことに「良い名前ですね」「ぴったりですね」などと良く言っていただきます。飲み助の私にはぴったりだと、雅号を決める際に即決で決めたお気に入りの雅号です。ただ、最近教室を始めたところ、同門の先生から「雅号をつけるときは先生の一字をもらうのだから井上さんのお弟子さんは“酔”の字をいただくんですね（笑）」と言われ、ちょっと早まったかなと。ただ、自分の師から「師の字に拘らなくてもよいし、“紅”の字をあげても良い」と言っていただけたので一安心です。(写真1は雅号をいただいたときの贈書号色紙です。)

 

実際、どれくらいの人が師の一字を名のっているのか気になり、田宮文平氏の書家評伝「『現代の書』の検証」の巻末にある「近現代書家の人脈」（写真２部分）を見てみました。ご覧の通り意外にも師事した書家の名前の一部をつけている人は少ない気がしますね。

 

雅号はもともと、呪詛の対象にならないように本名を隠す目的で別名をつける中国の風習が元となっています。本名である諱（いみな）を使わず普段の呼び名である字（あざな）やペンネームとして号（ごう）を名乗ったのです。この風習はアジア特有ではなく、モーセの十戒にも「神の名をみだりに唱えてはならない」と名前を呼ぶ事への忌避が見受けられます。

 

書聖として有名な王羲之（おうぎし）も字は「逸少（いつしょう）」で、普段は字か職業人としてのタイトルである「王右軍」などと呼ばれていました。書家であり詩人としても有名な蘇軾（そしょく）もこちらは本名の諱で 蘇東坡（そとうば）が号です。私は当初、彼のことを書家と詩人として別々の名前で知ったためすっかり別人だと思ってしまいました。

 

皆さんも自分の雅号やペンネームを考えてみると楽しいですよ！

“雅号Gagou” is pseudonym or other name than real name like pen name. My gagou is “紅酔Kousui”. Many friends say, “Good name!”, “It expresses you well” as the name can be read as “drunken(酔) and goes red(紅)”. (LOL). Recently I was worried about my name, as my colleague said “Calligraphers’ pseudonym usually uses one letter of their teachers’ name. So your pupil should use the letter drunken(酔), shouldn’t they?” Oh, all my students will be Drunken?! However, I was so relieved as my teacher had kindly advised me no need to use the letter(酔), and could use another letter Red(紅) or any other letters as they like. (Picture 1 is the certificate of my gagou.)

 

I have checked how many modern calligraphers use the same one letter of their teacher names. Please refer the Picture 2, a part of “Human network of modern calligraphers” quoted from Verification of the "Modern Calligraphers"” by Mr. Bunpei Tamiya. As you may see not many calligraphers use the same letter with their teachers. Upper line means who they study from.

 

Gagou was originally from China, where they used to keep their real name secret to avoid curse and use nicknames or pseudonyms. This kind of custom is not unique for Asia. You may find in The Ten Commandments of Moses, “You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God”.

 

Wang Xizhi(王羲之), the Sage of Calligraphy, has also another name, Yishao（逸少）. People called him as Yishao, or Wang Youjun(王右軍) as his military rank. Su Shi(蘇軾), famous poet and calligrapher, also has another name, So Dongpo(蘇東坡). At first, I learned Su Shi as poet and Su Dongpo as calligrapher, so I thought they were different persons.
