墨と硯について長らく気になっている異説があります。定説は「墨は磨り方、硯によって色味が変わる」と言う物ですが、その異説は「墨粒子の大きさは、磨り方を変えても硯を変えても変わらない。よって定説は誤りである」というもので、為近磨巨登氏が「墨のすべて」（木耳社 2010年12月10日）という本の中で報告されています。

 

彼は何種類もの墨をいくつもの硯を使って磨り下ろし、墨の粒子と硯の鋒芒（ほうぼう　硯の表面にある微細な凸凹）を、なんと電子顕微鏡を使って観察しました。（写真参照）。結果、コロイド状の墨の粒子は鋒芒と比較してあまりにも小さく、磨り方や硯によって差が出ることはあり得ないと結論されています。

 

自分でもやってみようと思い、何種類かの墨、硯で試してみました。確かに色味や書き味の違いを見ることはできませんでした。ただ、自分は見識、経験も浅く、持っている墨や硯も安価なものばかりで為近氏の説を証明するものではありません。何人かの先輩書道家さんや書道具屋さんにも尋ねてみましたが、みなさん「確かにちがいはある」と仰るものの反証を聞くことはできませんでした。「そんな異端を言ったら怒られるからやめておきなさい」と言われたこともあります。

 

書道教室を開き、人を指導するようになって、墨や硯についてもお話しする機会が増えてきました。自分が確信を持てない物を人に語ることには抵抗があり、何か確たる答えを得たいと折ある毎に尋ね、調べている今日この頃です。もしこの疑問に答えをお持ちの方がありましたら是非ご一報下さい。宜しくお願いします。

There is a heresy about ink and ink stone that’s been on my mind. It is generally believed that colors of ink could change by how to rub down inkstick over ink stone, or even by ink stones. The heresy is that no change should be caused by how to rub nor ink stones. Mr. Makoto Tamechika insists the heresy on his book “Sumi no Subete (All about Ink)” (Dec 10, 2010, Mokujisha)

 

Mr. Tamechika rubbed down various ink sticks over ink stones and examined particles of ink and surface of ink stones with an electron microscope(!). (Please refer photos of Ink and Surface of Ink Stone). He reported that particle of ink is too small comparing to bump of ink stone to make difference by how to rub down nor ink stones.

 

I tried to rub down ink sticks over various ink stones too. I could not see difference either, but  it would not prove his theory as my ink sticks and ink stones are quite cheap and I don’t have enough experience and knowledge to say something. I also asked some senior calligraphers and shops of calligraphy goods, but could not get clear answers, though they all said “There should be difference”. Once even said “Don’t touch such heresy which is against senior calligraphers’ opinion.”

 

I just started to teach calligraphy and have more chances to talk about ink and ink stones. I don’t want to teach what I am not confident. While I continue to study by myself, appreciate if someone could explain what makes difference or not.
