「どうして日本語のわからない外国の方も書を美しいと思うんだろう」と、ずっと考えてます。脳科学の本も読んでいるのですが面白い分析を見つけました。直接に書の分析ではありませんが、書に広げて考えてみました。

 

以下、要約して引用します。

 

動く作品の「モビール」で有名なアーティスト、アレクサンダー・カルダーについて。彼のモビールは、初期は原色で色付けがされ、モーターによって一定の動き方をするものだったが、徐々に自然の空気の動きを利用する物に変わり、後期には白か黒の単色、または白黒のツートンに変わる。

これは運動に反応する脳の第５次視覚野の性質を反映している。この視覚野は不規則な動きに対して最も活動が高まるが、色を処理する第4次視覚野の活動と競合する。つまり、第5次視覚野の活動が最適化されるのは、１）無彩色の物が、２）視野内を不規則に動いているとき、である。

文字として判読できない外国人にとって「書」は、「黒い墨の線が白い紙の上で不規則な動きをする物」であり、第5次視覚野を活発に刺激するのです。もちろん、これは文字として認識できる日本人にも当てはまりますが、文字を読もうとして反応するブローカ野も活動してしまうため返って視覚野の活動を楽しめなくなるのではないかと想像します。そのため、理解できない草書や漢詩に対して日本人は拒否反応を示すのではないでしょうか？

 

まだまだ勉強中で、この分野の書に関する先行研究があるかも知れません。どなたかご存じの方があれば是非お知らせ下さい。

I have been thinking why non-Japanese, who do not understand Japanese, could find Japanese calligraphy beautiful. Recently I found an interesting article in a book of brain science. It does not mention about calligraphy but may be applicable to calligraphy too.

 

Here are summary excerpts from the book.

 

 “About Alexander Calder, famous artist for kinetic sculpture=mobile. When he invented mobile at first, it was colored and moved by motors in a certain way. Then he changed mobiles to be moved irregularly by wind, and at last colored black, white or black-and-white.

 This is well reflecting behavior of the brain’s 5th visual area. This area reacts the most actively to random movement, while the area will not work at the same time with the 4th area, which handles colors. In other words, activity of the 5th area will be optimized when we see 1) black/white items 2) are moving irregularly”.*

For non-Japanese, who do not understand Japanese language, “Japanese calligraphy” is “drawing black lines irregularly on white paper” and will stimulate the 5th visual area. Of course, this is applicable to Japanese too. However, as Japanese would try to read letters, it will also activate the Broca’s area of brain which related to literacy. So, they could not focus on visual stimulation. That is why Japanese feel a rejection of cursive style and Chinese poems which they could not understand.

 

I am still studying, then could just have missed earlier studies. Appreciate if you could advice any studies about how brains recognize beauty of calligraphy.
